Virginia is the only state that bans the use of radar detectors. Historically, only one other state has had a similar law, and it was repealed years ago. When the facts are examined it is clear Virginia should do the same.

The fact is radar readings by police officers are often in error. They are subject to a variety of electronic malfunctions and external interference. In fact, some experts estimate that as many as 20 percent of all radar readings are incorrect. Citizens should be able to monitor the use of radar, so they don’t become victims of false readings. Particularly, given the large fines and insurance surcharges associated with speeding tickets.

What justifies this unfair and illogical law? Presumably safety, but there is no evidence to suggest that the detector ban has made Virginia’s roads safer. The nation’s fatality rates have fallen consistently for almost two decades. Virginia, however, has not seen a more substantial drop in fatalities than the nation as a whole. In reality, radar detectors can reduce travel speeds, aid enforcement, and promote safer driving. Studies have shown that the accident rate for radar detector owners was actually lower than it was for other motorists.

There are many terrific things that make our state unique, the radar detector ban is not one of them. There is simply no justification for Virginia to continue its ban on radar detectors. The ban is an affront to personal liberty. It's time that the politicians in Richmond do what's best for Virginia. They should repeal the ban.
